Description: This is the outside boundary of the Kansas University Field Station, KUFS, management units (it is also the TNC ownership boundary for the Welda Prairie). A shapefile coverage of boundaries was created by Dean Kettle using ArcView by on-screen digitizing with a high-quality image as background (the exact image source is not recalled, but was a commonly available source in the public domain taken 2001-2004).On 9 January 2012, Dean Kettle and Jorgina Ross modified the shapefile to include a new 80-acre parcel known as the Sunset Prairie. This tract is a high-quality hay meadow and is located about two miles northwest of the town of Welda. The 80 acres was acquired by The Nature Conservancy and incorporated into the Preserve in 2011. To incorporate the 80-acre site into the existing shapefile, we digitized on-screen the presumed four corners from a 2006 NAIP image. The north and west boundaries were set as the south and east edges (respectively) of the visible county road. The south boundary was set as the center of a mostly wooded fenceline. The east boundary was set by first approximating the boundary, based on other features, and then measuring the east-west distance to confirm accuracy. Note that the polygon we drew is the vegetated area of the 80-acre parcel and that a true polygon of land ownership would include to the center of the road.
