Terrestrial Species of Concern:
This layer shows buffered locations of terrestrial plants and animals considered to be Species of Concern in Kansas. The layer includes location data for: 88 species of terrestrial wildlife designated as Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) in the State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP); one polygon representing a concentration of bat caves in the Red Hills physiographic province; and 17 plant taxa with a Global Conservation Status rank of G1-G3. All state and federal listed Endangered and Threatened wildlife, and all wildlife designated as Species In Need of Conservation (SINC), are on the SGCN list as well as other rare and/or declining species. However, many of the 285 species on the SGCN list, including some species listed as Threatened or Endangered, are not represented in this layer due to lack of mappable data. The state’s two federally protected plant species are represented in this layer. Data contained in this layer are not the result of comprehensive surveys, and do not represent a definitive statement on the presence or absence of protected species. Absence of records in any particular area in no way implies that rare species do not occur in that location. This layer is not intended to be used for final project review. Persons in need of detailed data for a specific project area should consult with KDWPT and the Kansas Natural Heritage Inventory.
Aquatic Species of Concern:
Buffered locations of fish, mussels, amphibians and snails listed as Threatened, Endangered, Candidate, or otherwise considered a species of concern in Kansas. There are 124 species represented and includes, Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) and Species In Need of Conservation (SINC).
Actual locations are somewhere within the 3 sq. mile polygon area, but not necessarily at the centroid. Species of concern location data are derived from Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, Kansas Natural Heritage Program, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and others utilizing published and unpublished reports, datasets from cooperating institutions and individuals, and original field surveys. These data are not the result of comprehensive surveys, and do not represent a definitive statement on the presence or absence of protected species. Absence of records in any particular area in no way implies that rare species do not occur in that location. Persons interested in an area are encouraged to consult with KDWPT and Kansas Natural Heritage program for additional information.
