snippet: This layer shows areas in public ownership and private conservation management. Primary data sources include the Protected Areas Database of the US (PAD-US), the Managed Area database of the Kansas Natural Heritage Inventory, and the KS_Public_Lands file provided by Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism. Additional data sources include county and municipal governments and holders of private conservation easements. The layer is reasonably complete for lands in federal and state ownership at the time of publication. Lands in other types of ownership (county, municipal, private) were included based on availablity and time constraints. Although we made every effort to represent boundaries accurately, errors in boundary delineation are possible. We request that users send corrections as well as omissions to the Kansas Natural Heritage Inventory for inclusion in the next update. Inclusion in this database does not in any way imply public access to any property. The owning or managing entity should be contacted to determine if/when public access is permitted.

accessInformation: Creation of this layer has a long history and has been made possible by efforts of many individuals and institutions, most notably the U.S. Geological Survey-GAP Analysis Program, Kansas GAP Analysis Program, and the Kansas Biological Survey's Kansas Applied Remote Sensing (KARS) and Natural Heritage programs. Funding for the current update was provided by the USDA-NRCS and the Kansas Water Office.

description:

Data from a variety of sources was compiled into a single, statewide layer showing areas in public ownership and private conservation management. This layer includes lands administered or managed by the US Bureau of Reclamation, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Forest Service, US Dept. of Defense, US National Park Service, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, state universities, and non-governmental organizations. The layer includes all county parks in Johnson, Sedgwick, and Douglas counties, and most of the parks in Shawnee county, and includes municipal parks in the more heavily populated areas of the state. In addition to conservation easements held by The Nature Conservancy and the Kansas Land Trust the layer contains long-term easements enrolled in the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) and Grassland Reserve Program (GRP) that were included in the PAD-US layer at the time of download (Nov 3, 2017).

Legitimate overlaps exist in the boundaries of federal reservoir lands. For each area there is a single polygon that represents the entire federal fee land boundary. These reservoir lands are comprised of multiple management units. Thus we have included these individual management units as separate polygons that overlap the entire federal property.
